Sedge Southworth

Coach Southworth has always had a passion for running. He has been coaching for almost 2 decades and has had more than a handful of athletes participate in prestigious races in cross country as well as track and field. Coach Southworth got his start in coaching as an assistant cross-country coach at Principia in 2004 and 2005 working with Chuck Wilcoxen. He then went on to coach high school track and field jumpers and sprinters in Bloomington, Indiana and Buena Vista, Colorado. Coach Southworth also worked three winters helping canine long-distance athletes as a handler for an Iditarod sled dog team. While coaching in CO, he was the director of the 100 Elk Outdoor Education Center in where he spent several years leading primarily youth, but also adult groups and college sports teams through team building exercises.

Coach Southworth’s love of running started in seventh grade in eastern Kentucky. In the eleventh grade he helped start a varsity cross country team at his school. In college he competed in both cross country in the fall and track and field in the winter/spring seasons. After college he went back to running only distance since he has always loved trail running. Coach Southworth still competes in road/trail races as well as open track meets.
