Elsah, ILL. -- The Thunder Chickens were victorious over the Washington University Griffins at Principia on Saturday during Principia's homecoming weekend. The Thunder Chickens played their most disciplined defensive game yet and was able to keep the Griffins at bay nearly the entire game.
Principia threatened early but had a penalty called on them only 10 meters away from Washington University's try line and gave up possession. Just six minutes later, the Griffins were called for a high tackle inside their own 22 meter line. Principia attempted a penalty kick but missed. While nearly the entire first half was played on Washington University's end of the field, their style of play allowed them to control the ball well, and thus it wasn't until the 29th minute in the first half that fly half
Tom Bisbee was able to score a try. Nine minutes later, after beating the opposing fly half, he set up outside center
Tyler Marunde for his first try of the game. The score at the end of the half was 12-0.
Early in the second half, the Griffins had a great weak side run off of a scrum. Washington University's fly half was able to avoid two tacklers and gained nearly 40 meters before being taken down by fullback
Taylor Post. In the 8th minute, several penalties by Principia inside their own 22 meter line allowed a Griffin forward to run a banger off of the mark for a try. Soon after the kickoff, the Thunder Chickens gained possession of the ball off of a defensive ruck, and several phases later Marunde scored his second try of the game. In the next eight minutes, Marunde added two more trys. Bisbee scored another one in the 34th minute to bring the final score to 36-7.
The Thunder Chickens' next game is away against Missouri University of Science and Technology on October 23rd.
