Principia rugby loses close match

ELSAH, ILL. -- Principia lost 19-18 to Missouri University of Science and Technology on Saturday during a windy match in Rolla, Mo.. Both teams were quick to kick as the strong cross-winds and hard field led to challenging conditions. The Thunder Chickens came out strong and drove the Miners all the way to their 5 meter line in the first few minutes of the game. However, Principia lost their own lineout, and the S&T was able to kick the ball away. Then, ten minutes into the first half, the S&T kicked the ball deep, recovered it, and went up 0-5. Just a minute later, Principia scrum half Tom Bisbee scored the first of his two tries and evened the score at 5-5. Bisbee's second try came in the 31st minute.

In the 1st minute of the second half, a won scrum by the Thunder Chickens led to fullback Taylor Post scoring a try wide. S&T answered with a drive in the 19th minute, to bring the score to 15-12. Two quick penalties by the Miners led to a Principia penalty kick, giving Principia a six point lead. The teams continued to trade kicks, until Principia was awarded a scrum just inside their 22 meter line with just four minutes left in the game. The ball came loose, and S&T's scrum half was able to recover the ball and score. The Miners made their conversion kick, to bring the final score to 19-18.

Principia next plays at home Saturday at 11:00 AM against Saint Louis University.
