Chickens top S&T

St. Louis, MO - Principia defeated Missouri University of Science and Technology 26-10 in a close match at Principia's Saint Louis campus. Newcomers Rob Terrell and Wes Flemming played their first matches, and Greg Freeman played in his second.

While the Thunder Chickens spent much of the game on S&T's half of the field, strong defense by S&T made it difficult for the Chickens to score. After several missed scoring opportunities early in the game, including a beautiful fullback crash by Drake Schaberg, Principia was able to maintain the ball for several phases near S&T's try line after winning a lineout. Strong rucking by the forwards and good positioning by the backs created an overload and allowed Martin Buchanan to punch through a hole through the S&T defense in the 16th minute.

Sixteen minutes later, rapid passing between Tom and Will Bisbee led to a second try. However, S&T struck back just minutes later after the Chickens missed a tackle, and S&T put a difficult conversion kick straight through the goal posts to bring the score to 12-7 at the half.

A penalty early in the second half against Principia gave S&T the opportunity to kick a long penalty kick and bring the score to a very close 12-10. However, Principia dominated the second half by controlling the ball. Tom Bisbee scored twelve minutes into the half, and later Max Russell scored his first career try, bringing the final score to 26-10. Justin Taylor converted three out of four attempts.

Because S&T had several players out for injury, Flemming and returning player Brian Lord volunteered to fill in. Both played very well; Flemming made several key tackles, and Lord was responsible for S&T's lone try. The Thunder Chickens were also joined by alumni Bobby Hawley, Shawn Brown, and Jonah Swidersky.
