Men 6th At Conclusion of Fantastic Liberal Arts Meet

Elsah, IL- The Panthers welcomed 8 other men's teams to the Liberal Arts Championships hosted in their home pool.  It was a fantastic meet with 70+ lifetime bests, 11 new entries on the Principia All-time Top 10 individual records, 4 new Top 10 relay swims and one new relay record.  The teams swam amazingly well as every swimmer and diver walked away with at least one lifetime best to their credit.  In the end the Men placed 6th overall, a score that could easily have been 5th.  Add in multiple pool and meet records set by teams across the board, it was a fast and fantastic meet.

Day One

Day one started fast for the men.  In the first event, the 200 Free relay, the team of junior Colin Clark, freshmen Tyler Loechner and Andy Furbush and junior Will Crowley set a new team record of 1:29.05.  It was an amazing time seeing as they were using safe starts.  The night swim could put them under 1:29.  The first individual event, the 500 saw two new lifetime bests from Loechner and fellow freshman Chip Jackson.  Loechner's 4:57.24 seeded him 9th for finals and put him 6th on the Prin Top 10.  The 200 IM saw equally great swims with sophomores Josh Curry and Zach Harmon and freshman Andy Furbush all swimming lifetime bests.  Furbush's swim (2:05.00) seeded him 11th for finals and put him 10th on the Prin Top 10.  The 50 Free saw Clark and senior captain Bob Cleveland swim season best times and Crowley swim a lifetime best and just miss coming back at night.  The 400 Medley relay of Loechner, Crowley, Furbush and Clark swam to a 3:44.51 which placed them 4th on the Prin Top 10 and Loechner's leadoff 56.36 100 Back was a lifetime and 4th place on the Prin Top 10.  It was a great morning of swimming for the guys with plenty of opportunity to score points at night.

The divers took to the 1-meter  boards next and went 3 for 3 with best scores.  Junior Matt Poulos led the way with a 256.90 score to qualify in 8th place.  Fellow junior Nick Trapp scored a 254.10 to finish 9th and junior Rigel Valentine finished 10th with a 234.10.

The men started the night off with a 6th place finish in the 200 Free relay.  The men were a little tight and not able to drop into the 1:28s and settled for a 1:29.44.  Loechner was upset at missing finals in the 500 and set out to dominate the consolation heat, which he did.  He swam a 4:56.73 to win the heat and move up to 5th on the Prin Top 10.  His time would have put him 6th in finals.  Furbush was up next in the consolation heat of the 200 IM and was not to be outdone by Loechner and he scored his own win in the heat to finish 9th.  His 2:02.68 moved him up to 9th on the Prin Top 10.  Poulos then dove in the 1 meter diving final and finished in 8th place.  The men finished up with a 6th place finish in the 400 Medley relay, improving on their time going a 3:43.30 and moving to 7th on the Prin top 10.  It was a great night of swimming.

Day Two

The 200 Medley relay team of Loechner, Crowley, Furbush and Clark opened the second day with a bang – going 1:41.44 to qualify 5th and place them 4th on the Prin Top 10.  Sophomore Zach Harmon qualified next, swimming a 5:25.99 for the 400 IM and qualifying 9th.  Furbush, Crowley and sophomore Josh Curry all swam lifetime bests in the 100 Fly: 53.83, 54.73 and 58.93 respectively.  Furbush qualified 9th with his new Prin Top 10 time and Crowley qualified 14th.  Freshman Chip Jackson got on the board with a 16th place qualifying effort of 1:56.77 in the 200 Free.  Loechner and Clark then added two more qualifying times in the 100 Back.  Loechner's 57.00 qualified him 9th, again, while Clark's 57.55 qualified him right behind in 10th.  With plenty of swims for night, the team was set up for another big scoring opportunity.

Night of day two started a little rough for the men, as the 200 Medley relay team was disqualified for an early start.  It was a tough blow as the men were on track to be much faster than their morning swim.  But they regrouped and focused on their individual swims.  Harmon got the ball rolling in the right direction with a 9th place finish in the 400 IM, improving on his time from the morning swim.  Furbush and Crowley then went 10th and 15th in the 100 Fly consolation finals heat.  Jackson added his points to the team with his 16th place finish in the 200 Free.  Again Loechner had missed making finals by a small margin and took it out on the consolation heat field.  His 55.62 not only won the heat to place him 9th, but moved him to 2nd on the Prin Top 10.  Clark, swimming in the next lane, went out with him and swam a best time of 56.95 to finish well clear of the rest of the field and place 10th.  The 800 Free relay team of Cleveland, Curry, Harmon and Jackson swam best times to finish in 7th place.  It was a good night of scoring for the men and with one day left they looked to be improving on the team standing.

Day Three

Loechner and Clark started the men off right with two great swims in the 200 Back.  Loechner swam a 2:03.93 to qualify 7th (finally in Finals!) and move to 4th on the Prin Top 10.  Clark swam a 2:06.81 to qualify 10th.  In the 100 Free, Crowley finally broke onto the Prin Top 10 and Finals with a 48.74 and an 8th place qualifying time.  Curry and Harmon both swam to lifetime bests in the 100 Free.  In his last individual swim of his career, Cleveland swam a lifetime best in the 200 Breast of 2:41.13.  Furbush then added another Finals swim for the night with a 2:04.14 in the 200 Fly that seeded him 5th for Finals and 6th on the Prin Top 10.  Then came the 400 Free relay, the relay the men have been focused on all year.  With conservative starts Crowley, Clark, Furbush and Loechner came within less than a second of the record with a 3:16.46 to be seeded 4th for Finals.  The men then took to the 3 meter board.  Poulos and Trapp both qualified in the top 8 for finals, 8th and 7th respectfully.  Valentine dove to a best score and a 9th place finish.

At night the men started the scoring with Jackson's 15th place in the 1650 where he dropped almost a full minute to finish in 18:50.77.  Loechner and Clark continued the scoring with lifetime best swims from both of them, 2:01.50 and 2:05.51 respectively, to finish in 6th and 10th in the 200 Back.  Crowley swam a great 100 Free race and moved up to 7th place despite a time of 49.10, a little off what he wanted.  But he would have the relay later to swim it again. Furbush added another new Prin Top 10 time of 2:03.22 in the 200 Fly where he finished 6th.  Trapp and Poulos both dove better in finals and improved their scores.  Poulos scored a 235.75 to finish 8th while Trapp scored 285.65 to finish 6th.  And then the 400 Free relay. Crowley came back from his disappointment in the individual 100 to give the team a great leadoff of 48.50 and put them in position for the record.  With Clark, Furbush and Loechner all putting in faster times, the record was within reach.  Unfortunately there was an early start seen by the officials which led to a DQ.  It was a disappointing ending for the men but could not overshadow what they had accomplished together: 8 new Top 10 individual swims and 4 new Top 10 relay swims including a new relay record.  Overall the men swam and dove to 43 lifetime bests and a 6th place finish in the meet.  It was an exciting and aggressive meet that resulted in great performances.
