Men’s tennis loses tough match to Greenville College 2-7

ELSAH, ILL. -- Principia College men's tennis faced the third ranked team in the SLIAC, Greenville College today, in almost perfect tennis weather. In doubles, #2 doubles Zimmerman/Wold took an early lead, going up by two service breaks. However, Greenville came back fighting and the match went to a set tiebreaker at 8 all. The tie break went back and forth until 6 all, but Prin fell 8-6. #3 doubles Ross/Sydness lost a tight well played match 9-7.
In many of the matches tonight, Principia took an early lead, but could not follow through. This continued into singles too. At #3 singles
Kevin Hagenlocher handled his opponent 6-2, 6-2. Hagenlocher, who is 3 and 0 in conference, was in control of the match the entire time. Hagenlocher is undefeated in conference and ranked #1 going into the SLIAC individual tournament this weekend. Ben Black at #6 singles played until dark tonight. His match was tight from the beginning with a 6-7 (7-4) loss in the first set and a 7-5 (7-5) win in the second set. Black had multiple match points in the 10 point tiebreaker, but finished winning 13-11.
This was a close match for Principia, one that if played again most likely would have gone another way. Men's tennis individually and as a team is preparing well and looking strong heading into the SLIAC individual tournament this Friday and Saturday. Tonight's performance was proof of that. In a conference where the teams are very even, Principia should compete well.
