ELSAH, ILL. -- A large home crowd saw the Principia College Thunder Chickens defeat the Washington University Griffins in a wet and muddy game during Parents Weekend.
Principia scored first, in the 9th minute, after fly half
Tom Bisbee blocked a punt and then kicked the ball along the ground repeatedly until he was able to touch it down in the try zone, giving the Thunder Chickens a 5-0 lead. Five minutes later, a pair of penalties by Washington University -- first at their ten meter line, and again at the next tackle -- led to a quick tap penalty kick by hooker
Paul Olsen,
who then scored. The conversion kick was made, increasing Principia's lead to 12-0.
The teams traded field position until the 35th minute, when Principia scored again. After Principia was awarded a scrum just five meters from the try line, they gained a penalty when the Griffins collapsed the scrum. Another quick tap penalty kick by Olsen led to his second try of the game. Washington University responded just two minutes later by pinning Principia inside their own 22 meter line with a solid punt. The Griffins were able to recover the ball on the ensuing chase, and scored several phases later. At halftime the score was 19-5.
Washington University got the first try of the second half, in the 20th minute, and pulled within seven points by making the conversion kick. However, Principia put the game away when inside center
Will Bisbee scored two tries. With both conversion kicks successful, Principia won 33-12.
