Gold and Blue play tough against Eureka but fall just short

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EUREKA, ILL. --

Vs. Eureka

Game 1:  5-4 loss (8 innings)

What a great start for the Gold and Blue.  It was their best 1st inning all season as they went out and scored 3 runs on 4 hits to start the game.  They managed to score 1 more in the 2nd without a hit.  After the 1st though the offense went to sleep for the next 5 innings managing only 1 hit in all those innings.  The defense played very well early holding Eureka hitless for the first 3 innings.  But the lack of intensity on offense eventually crept into the defense and the mistakes began.  Eureka kept chipping away and finally got a run in the 4th.  The 6th was where it got away with the defense giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and an error.  The 7th was scoreless so the teams went to the International Tie-Breaker rule in the 8th.   A base running error for Principia took them out of the inning and Eureka managed to score the game winning run on an error and a fly ball out.  Tough one to lose!

Casey Lee was 3 for 3 with a walk a stolen base and scored 2 runs.  Christine Nacewicz, Marina Whitney, Makaela Thompson and Thanda Kyaw all had 1 hit.  Both 'Nac' and Marina stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.  Makaela had an RBI.

Game 2:  6-5 loss

It looked like there was still a little carry over from Game 1 to start Game 2 with Principia giving up 3 runs in the 1st but the team settled down nicely and played some solid ball after that.  The defense was fairly consistent for the next 3 innings.  After only mustering 1 hit in the first 4 innings the offense came to life in the 5th with 3 hits, a walk and scored 2 runs to make it a 3-2 game.  Unfortunately the defense gave the runs back in the bottom of the 5th with 2 errors and 2 hits.  The team kept battling though and made it really interesting in the 7th as they gave it their best shot.  They scored 3 runs in the 7th but left the tying run at 3rd to end the game.  This was a better effort by the team compared to the 1st game as they stayed focused in more innings than in the first one.

Thanda Kyaw continued her good day at the plate by going 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.  Christine Nacewicz, Marina Whitney, Makaela Thompson, Marianna Distel and Jocelyn Shoemake all had 1 hit.  Christine earned an RBI with her hit and Marina had a walk and scored a run.  Makaela was hit by a pitch, and her hit was a triple and it earned her 3 RBI's.  Marianna added to her team leading HBP (hit by pitch) stat by getting hit 2 more times and she scored a run.  Jocelyn's hit was a triple which earned her an RBI and she scored a run.
