GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Principia rugby team, the Thunder Chickens are now USA Rugby 7's DII Open Division National Champions! The Thunder Chickens traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina for the national tournament after qualifying for it by winning the 7's Conference Championship here at Principia College.
The tournament was a two day format with a round robin on the first day and the semi finals and finals on the second day. The Thunder Chickens first played Emory University on Saturday where they took the decisive victory 47-5 over the Eagles. The next round robin game was against Layfayette College where Principia again dominated play, winning 38-12. The last game of round robin was played against James Marshall which was a tough game for the Thunder Chickens, they fell 10-12. The Thunder Chickens finished the day 2-1, knowing that they still had a chance to place 1st-4th at Nationals.
Sunday's play started with a bang when the Thunder Chickens took down Sonoma State University 19-5 at 8:00 am (EST). The Thunder Chickens then advanced to the National Championship game at 12:20 pm (EST). The team took on the University of Wisconsin- Stout and came away with the victory 27-12!!
