ELSAH, ILL. – Today was a big match for the Principia Men's Tennis Team against SLIAC opponent Webster University. This would be the first match that had some portion played underneath the newly installed lights at Morey Court. Both teams came into today's match undefeated in conference. However, it was Webster who left undefeated in conference, securing 1
st place in the SLIAC, with a 7-2 victory over the Panthers.
The Panthers came out and dug themselves an insurmountable hole after doubles, by losing all three matches. The second doubles team of
Kevin Hagenlocher and
Kenny Sydness came out of the gates slow, and were unable to find any traction within the match. They lost 8-1. The 3
rd doubles team of
Andrew Fields and
Andrew Rohrer also stumbled early and could not muster any threat towards their opponents. They also lost 8-1. The match of the day was played at 1
st doubles.
Jason Wissman and
Joey Sander played great doubles for stretches, but were unable to close out the match after serving for the set at 7-6 and 8-7. They lost 9-8 (5) in a tiebreaker.
Falling behind 3-0 doubles is an almost insurmountable deficit to overcome. This is especially true against a quality opponent like Webster University. All of the Panthers played extremely hard in their singles matches, trying to create a magical comeback, but the deficit was too large.
Some stellar singles performances were provided by
Jason Wissman at 1
st singles, who played very steady tennis throughout his match. He won 6-1, 6-0. Also,
Joey Sander played a very good match at 2
nd singles. After winning the first set and losing the second, Sander played a very steady third set to take the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
The Panthers next play against SLIAC opponent Greenville College. This match will played on April, 16
th at 4:45 pm on Morey Courts.
