ELSAH, IL – The men's swimming team hosted their first home meet of the season on Saturday against Franklin College and Lindenwood-Belleville. While they lost to both teams, they swam well, earning season best times across the board. The team continues to get better and stronger as they lead up to their big fall meet in two weeks. The team has progressed in the past two weeks, and we expect even better performances in coming weeks.
The meet started strong as the men went 1:47.00 in the 200 Medley relay. The men were anchored by two season best swims: junior captain
Hunter Mehring (50 Breast – 25.03) and senior
Nick Boyd (50 Free – 24.93). In the 200 Free, junior
Zacher Lewis swam a season best 1:59.55 breaking the 2 minute barrier for only the second time ever. Two more season best swims were turned in by freshman
Garrett Barner and Boyd in the 50 free: 24.07 and 26.00 respectively. Wrapping up the first session of swimming Mehing won the 200 IM with a season best 2:05.77.
The bests continue in the next session with Barner swimming 56.83 in his 100 Fly for a season best. The 100 Back saw two more season bests swim: Mehring (55.19) and Boyd (1:11.56). Lewis added to his bests for the meet with a 5:34.92 in the 500 Free. Mehring notched his third season best of the meet a 1:01.15 to win the 100 Breast.
It was a meet with tough competition but the team responded with some good performances of their own.
The team will be off for Thanksgiving weekend but will return to competition on Dec 4 & 5 at the Pioneer Classic at Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA.
