Softball takes game two against Iowa Wesleyan College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELSAH, ILL. --

GAME 1:  Iowa – 9                        Principia – 0

Based on the score this may look like another one that got away but this game was a huge turn around for the team.

Disappointed and a little frustrated with their play since returning from Myrtle Beach, the team held a meeting and went back to their Team Goals for the season to remind themselves why they were playing the game, what they wanted to achieve and what it was that makes them a team.  This proactive choice was exactly what they needed.

In the first inning Iowa put up 7 runs due to several errors but what happened during this inning was a foretelling of what was to come.  This time the team did not get discouraged or resign themselves to another loss, instead they got stronger as the inning went on.  They found the really good defense they had displayed earlier in the season.  They held Iowa to 2 more runs for the rest of the game and defensively played really well.  The offense did not arrive as Sam Bronkar got the teams only hit.

GAME 2:  Iowa – 8                        Principia – 11

In between games the team was applauded for its defensive turnaround and then challenged to do the same with their offense.  They were asked to express that right kind of aggressiveness that is necessary to play offensively well.  To say they responded is an understatement!

The team gave up 3 runs in the top of the 1st but came back and answered with 2 of their own in the bottom of the 1st.  In the 3rd Iowa put 4 more runs on the board but Principia came back and exploded for a 9 run inning.  They sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning and earned 5 extra base hits. Their defense took care of the rest as they posted their first conference win of the season.

Eight out of the nine starters scored in this game.  Sam Bronkar led the way with 3 hits, scored a run and had a double.  Yulia Marquardt, Thanda Kyaw and Jessy MacMullin all had 2 hits and scored 2 runs.  Jessy's hits were a double and a triple.  Ashley Shoemake and AC McMullen each had a hit and scored a run.  Emma Herman and Tanya Marquardt both had 2 walks and each scored a run.
