Principia Softball falls to the Spalding Golden Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Elsah, ILL. -- The Principia Panthers took on the Golden Eagles from Spalding at home today on a perfectly sunny Saturday.  The Panthers played well, but the Golden Eagles left with two wins.

In game one, the Golden Eagles didn't hesitate as they took the lead in the first inning with three runs. The Panthers weren't able to respond in the first inning, but in the bottom of the second, Claire Thompson lead off with a base hit, followed by a walk by Tori Cheatham, then back to back singles by Ashley Noville and Tanya Marquardt brought Claire home for their first run. Principia stayed strong the whole game, never letting it get out of hand, but Spalding was able to slowly chip away at the Panther defense and eventually score 8 runs. Despite the fact that Principia was playing pretty solid defense, the Golden Eagles were able to find holes and the Panthers couldn't muster up the hits needed to create an offensive flow.  Along with Claire and Tanya, AC McMullen and Tori Cheatham each got a single and Leah Schafer got a double. Game one ended with the Golden Eagles earning 8 runs and Principia earning only 1. The Golden Eagles came away with the win, 8-1.

The Panthers came into game two with the intention of attacking all facets of the game, and attack they did!  Principia made a lot of contact on the offensive side, as did the Golden Eagles, and both teams played great denfense. The score was 0-0 until the fourth inning when the Golden Eagles took the lead with 2 runs. The Panthers didn't give up and kept the Golden Eagles from scoring in the last three innings.  The score remained low, but the Panthers couldn't overcome the 2 run gap.  Noelle Shoemake, Sam Bronkar, Leah Schaefer and Tanya Marquardt each got a hit.

Overall, the outcome of the games did not reflect how well the Panthers did today at maintaining the intensity and never giving up!  The Panthers are back in action this Tuesday against St. Louis College of Pharmacy at Southside Park in Belleville, IL at 6:00 and 8:00 pm.
