Red Devils take down Panthers in softball home opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Elsah, ILL. --

Game 1: Eureka College 4, Principia 3

The Panthers came out strong at the start of game one, adjusting from their slow starts in previous games. The team played solid defense every inning, backing up pitcher Leah Schaefer. Schaefer consistently painted the corners, drawing ground balls and pop ups. The Panthers got down one run at the top of the first inning, and came back with the bats to score two in the bottom of the 1st. A strong start let the Panthers get comfortable offensively, and the bats didn't show up again until the end of the game.

AC McMullen started the Panthers off with a single and Lauren Daugherty followed with two doubles and a triple for the day. Hannah Hathaway also hit a double and Emily Hewitt had a single. Emily Hewitt, Lauren Daugherty, and Hannah Hathaway each had an RBI with AC Mc Mullen scoring and Lauren Daugherty crossing the plate twice.

Game 2: Eureka College 21, Principia 0

Game two began with Eureka scoring two runs in the first inning, followed by a tough second inning where the team seemed to lose all momentum, giving up 13 runs. The rest of the game fell completely flat as the Red Devils kept putting up runs and the Panthers unable to produce any themselves. Errors on the game for the Panthers were at a season high. Game two proved to be disappointing after a very well-played game one.

The Panther offense was lacking in this game with just Leah Schaefer and Lauren Daugherty hitting a single each. The Panthers were unable to bring anyone across the plate.

The Panthers are looking to re-group, and prepare for three more double headers next week. The goal for next week is to keep composure in high pressure situations, and hit the way the Panthers are capable of doing.
