Box Score 2 Springfield, ILL. -- Principia College Softball took to the road today to compete against non-conference opponent Robert Morris Springfield. The Panthers had a good outing, splitting with the Eagles, taking game one 1-0 and dropping game two 1-5.
Game 1: Principia 1, Robert Morris 0
Principia came out nice on offense putting balls in play, but unable to bring anyone across the plate. Players were making great contact, however, the balls kept going straight to Robert Morris defenders. The offense did stay consistent each inning, which gave the Eagles tough plays to handle. The Panthers also played great defense, holding the Eagles to zero runs. Leah Schaefer pitched a great game, giving her defense ground balls and pop ups. Not many balls left the infield for Principia, but one home run gave the Panthers the lead they needed for the defense to shut down the Eagles and win game one with a double play.
Singles in game one go to Samantha Bronkar, Hannah Hathaway, and Tanya Marquardt. Emily Hewitt hit her first home run of the season to give the Panthers the lead in the 7th inning.
Game 2: Principia 1, Robert Morris 5
The Panthers did not come out attacking on offense in game two. The offense rarely was able to get base runners on and even when they did, they were not able to bring anyone home. The Panther defense made too many errors which cost them several runs early in the game. However, the Panthers were able to get out of bases loaded situations several times and minimize the damage.
Tanya Marquardt had the Panther's only hit in game 2 with a single.
The Panthers are back in action again tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday, against Iowa Wesleyan University and Greenville College- both games at home for the Panthers!
