Softball falls to Greenville Panthers in home doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Elsah, ILL. -- The Principia Panthers hosted the Greenville Panthers for a home doubleheader today.  The Greenville Panthers outmatched Principia today and left with two decisive wins.

Game 1: Greenville 18, Principia 1
Principia fell behind by two runs early in the first inning, but then the Panthers turned the bats on right away to answer with one run. Greenville then started finding gaps in the Panther defense, making it difficult to get outs. The Panthers were striking the ball well, but struggled to keep the ball down for hard ground balls. When the Panthers were able to get base runners on, they weren't able to finish the job and bring the runs in, unfortunately leaving several on base.

Samantha Bronkar opened the gate for the Panthers as the lead off hitter getting a double to start the game. Bronkar also hit a single along with Hannah Hathaway who hit two singles. Leah Schaefer hit another double this game as well as a single. Schaefer also had the team's only RBI with Bronkar coming in to score.

Game 2: Greenville 13, Principia 4
In game two, Greenville continued to find gaps in Principia's defense, making it tough for the Panthers to get outs. The team couldn't quite connect the bat to the ball at the start of the game, struggling to get base runners on. With the Panther defense making a total of 3 errors, it was tough to bring in the win, but better offense in the 5th inning brought in 2 runs for the Panthers with a couple of clutch hits. A few mental errors cost the Panthers several runs, and the offense struggled to come back and answer for those runs. However, the Panthers were able to score in the bottom of the 6th with a clutch RBI from Ashley Noville to kick off the inning. The Panthers still struggled to bring runners in when bases were loaded. After a nice defensive inning against Greenville, the Panthers put the balls in play, forcing defensive errors from Greenville, and scoring 1 more run. The Panthers put in a lot of fight late in the game to score some extra runs.

Ashley Noville hit in 2 of the team's runs today with 2 singles. Tanya Marquardt also hit two singles while Emily Hewitt, Sarai Marcano, and Samantha Bronkar each hit one single for the Panthers. Hannah Hathaway continued to show great power at the plate with a double.

The next match up for the Panthers will be next Friday at home on Senior Night for a non-conference double header against the Blackburn Beavers at 6p and 8p.
