ESports at Principia has been a fun new adventure for the 22 members on the roster. With things winding down on the first official semester for the program, we look back on what was accomplished over the past few months. The eSport program officially sponsored and competed in three different games: Hearthstone, League of Legends, and Overwatch.
The season started off strong as Principia sponsored two Hearthstone teams. Principia eSport A led by senior
Nate Richards accompanied by senior
Cody Veidelis, senior
Cedar Brumm, and freshman Sammy Keys as the sub. The second team, Principia eSport B was led by freshman
Michael Coburn and included freshman Mitchel Coburn, and junior Robin Grindsaff. Both teams entered the
TESPA Collegiate Series and competed well against teams from Ohio State and Michigan State. Both teams finished relatively high in the rankings, with A ranked 21
st and B at 47
th in the north region which is arguably one of the tougher regions. The eSports team looks promising for next season with all of team B coming back as well as Sammy Keys who was a huge support for team A!
After hearthstone the focus was shifted to the League of Legends team led by senior
Cody Veidelis. The rest of the roster was comprised of brothers Michael & Mitchel Coburn,
Cedar Brumm,
Bailey Peticolas, and
Ian Carlson at sub. The team spent most of the semester gearing up for the very first
NACE League of Legends Invitational, which was the first of its kind, making Principia a part of eSport history in the United States. Principia was matched up against tough competition in their bracket and it came down to their matchup against heavily favored Columbia College. Principia played well and managed to take one game away from CC but fell short allowing CC to advance to the finals. The League of Legends team looks to improve from where they left off and key recruits for the upcoming year will allow for a much more competitive team.
At the same time as the
NACE Invitational, the Overwatch team competed in a friendly three institution tournament. The team was led by senior
Kent Bergeson and comprised of senior
Cody Veidelis, senior
Brandon Lesky, senior
Will Morehouse, sophomore Gavin Austin, freshman
Bailey Peticolas, and freshman Mitchel Coburn. The team competed against Morningside College and USC Sumter. Overall the team competed very well and it came down to just a few games between USC Sumter and Principia- USC Sumter came out on top, making Principia the runner up. The Overwatch team will compete at full strength in the TESPA Collegiate Tournaments this upcoming fall.
Overall the eSport program has accomplished a great deal in the four months since its establishment and expects to continue progressing into the fall season championship bound! Â Â Â
