Continuing the Strong Principia Women in Sports series, our next focus is Principia College alumni, All-American and Olympic athlete Ngozi Mwanamwambwa- Asinga. This series features Principia women alumni that were outstanding athletes during their time at Principia, and then also went on to be strong women in sports through their careers and passions.
Ngozi is a prime example of an outstanding collegiate athlete who also went on to be an Olympic athlete and then she continued her passion for sports in her career choices. Ngozi competed for Principia College in Track and Field for four years, graduating in 1993. During her time at Principia, Ngozi was a 7-time NCAA DIII All-American, placing in the top 8 in the nation in the 100, 200, and 400 meter races in 1991, 1992 and 1993. Ngozi was a member of the All-State Track Team in 1990 and 1991 at the beginning of her collegiate career, and she helped lead her team to a PCC Conference Championship in 1990-1991, when she was also part of the All Conference team. In 1992, Ngozi was the DIII national runner up in the 100 and 400 meter races, and in 1992, she was the national champion in the 200 meter race!
After graduating from Principia College with a major in Sociology/Anthropology and a minor in Women's Studies, along with several All-American titles under her belt, Ngozi went on to be the first woman to represent Zambia in the 1992 Olympic Games held in Barcelona, Spain. She then went on to compete in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia too.
Ngozi became a personal trainer in 2000, and worked for Gold's Gym for 10 years in the Atlanta area. Ngozi continued to advance her education when she completed an MBA from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Ngozi inspired many people over the 10 years she served as a personal trainer in Atlanta, however, she decided her passion could be best served in her home country of Zambia.
Ngozi moved back to Zambia about 4 years ago and opened up her own gym called GoGo Fitness. She continues to work as an athletic trainer and in the summers she also works with vulnerable kids in the area, offering swimming lessons. It is clear that Ngozi is such a strong woman in sports and she is passionate about inspiring and empowering others to be their best!
