Principia Takes on the Competition at the Hilltop Invite

The Principia Track and Field Team competed with 7 schools at Illinois College Friday night in the Hilltop Invite. Principia had strong performances in 11 different events, ranging from Chris Puduski in the shot put to Nick Lynch in the mile.

Recap of Men's Performances:
Zach Matthiesen and Abe Ott competed in the men's mile. It was a slow start for Matthiesen who was sitting in 10th place at the 200-meter mark.  Matthiesen moved up to 3rd at 400-meters and took the lead at 800-meters. He continued to increase his lead over the next four laps and finished in 1st in a time of 4:20. Ott started out quickly, coming through in 3rd at the 200-meter mark. The race shifted and Ott found himself in 7th at the 800-meter mark. He fought back over the next four laps and finished in 5th place with a time of 4:31.

Elliot Hummel led the Principia men through the first 400 meters of their 800-meter race. Then Chris Hronek took over at the 600-meter mark and finished first for the principia men in a time of 2:14. Elliot Hummel finished in 2:16 and Jeff Lewis finished in 2:18.

Mitchell Gill was the top finisher for the principia men in the 200-meter dash, running a time of 23.5. Gill also ran a strong first leg for the men's 4 x 400-meter relay team. After completing his leg of the race, Gill passed the baton to Dean Colarossi who ran the second leg in the relay. Colarossi handed the baton to Corey Carter, at that point the men were in third place. Carter took the baton and made a run for the lead. He first passed the Monmouth team who was in second and then with 100 meters left in his leg, passed Wash U, putting Principia in 1st place going into the final leg. Jon Ansumana ran a fast final leg to secure the lead and help the relay team finish in 1st place.

Corey Carter ran a 49 second 400-meter split for his leg of the relay. This time in an open 400-meter race would make him competitive at a national level. Carter also ran in the 60-meter dash and finished 7th out of 37 runners.
Jon Ansumana placed second overall in men's long jump with a mark of 21' 4 ¾.

Kai Fisher finished 1st in his heat of the 60-meter-high hurdles in a time of 10.67.

Recap of Women's Performances:
The women started out the night with a 4,000-meter DMR. Brie Burns, Tara Adhikari, Cha Cha Fisher, and Afton Leslie made up the DMR team and later Adhikari, Fisher, and Leslie ran together with Elsa Heath on the 4x 400-meter relay team to close out the night.

Leslie ran in the 400-meter dash, a different race from her usual 3k or mile run. She finished ahead of her seed time, coming through the finish in a 1:07.
