Elsah, IL —
In their final pre-season match Principia competes well but loses to Franklin College. In the doubles matches both teams started slowly and were not able to make up the deficit. The Principia teams were aggressive, moving and looking for the ball at the net but they did not finish off the points and made too many errors.
Watching the players in their singles matches it looked as though Principia was ahead in all the matches.
Hallie Jones at #1 singles played a great first set. She had to hold her serve to stay in the set several times. Hallie played a complete all court game hitting winners from the baseline and also coming to the net to close out points. She also served 12 aces in the match. At #2 singles,
Sarah Switzer, faced a very steady opponent who lobbed often and well. Sarah was driven into the back fence by high deep lobs. Sarah had a good match but is eager to work on her game to solve the problem of the lobbing opponent. At #3 singles
Dani Lomascolo played a steady game and forced her opponent to hit deep in the court. Dani moved well in her match, running down short balls and coming to net.
The final singles matches with
Amber Heady and
Katie Christy were the best showing for each of these freshmen. Amber, #4 singles, played long points with deep rallies covering all corners of the court. It was the steadiest play Amber has executed all season. She made great progress but her opponent was able to run down one more ball to finish off the points. At #5 singles, Katie improved on her tennis IQ and was in the right place on the court. She was reading her opponents preparation and strokes and was ready for the incoming ball. She improved on her return of serve getting a high percentage back into play.
The team's next home match in April 5
th against Blackburn. Match time is 4:30 PM, hope to see you at the courts.
