Decatur, ILL. -- The Principia Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams had a second Friday meet in a row; this one at the beautiful former Scovill Golf Course in Decatur, IL.
Millikin University hosted the meet, called the H.W. Wright Classic. Nineteen teams participated, and the weather was fantastic. The Panther women sped past Illinois College to earn 6
th place in their race, and the men took 8
th.
Both teams showed inspiring models of character. A mother of two runners from another team took a picture of
Spencer Christensen as he offered cups of cold water to his fellow competitors as they crossed the finish line. She was teary-eyed as she described this display of sportsmanship to one of Spencer's coaches.
Emily Staunton stopped midway through her race to assist a runner from another team. Once more help arrived and she resumed running, her pace more than made up for the stop. In fact- she came within 30 seconds of her lifetime best time. Cassidy Procter bested her previous week's PR by almost a full minute.
Next Saturday morning, members of the Principia athletic department and the cross country athletes will form teams of two to compete in a traditionally humorously-themed relay race on the home course, and, in two weeks, on October 13
th at 10am, Principia will host the Cowbell Classic.
