The Cowbell Still Rings at Principia’s Home Cross Country Course

Elsah, ILL. -- On Saturday 10/19, Principia Cross Country hosted the 19th Annual Cowbell Classic. It was a smaller meet than usual. Both races featured teams from William Woods University and Westminster. The women's race also had some runners from Stephens College. The men's race included a "Principia Outliers" team. This team featured several alums including Mark Whalley, Zach Matthiesen, Nick Lynch, Andy Crump, and Kevin Ward. Joining in on the fun were current students Dean Colarossi, a sprinter, and tennis players Daniel Gomez, and Elliott Matthiesen. The race may have been small, but that meant more pie for everyone!

The women started the day with a strong 6k run. The home-course advantage helped the team run very smart races on this difficult course. Sophomore Emme Schaefer led the team again with a third-place finish and a time of 25:28. Freshman Lindsey Huffman was right behind with a fifth-place finish and a time of 27:20. The men ran second with an 8k race. Senior Abe Ott had some good competition with his old teammate Zach just ahead of him. Ott finished 6th with a time of 28:26. Both teams placed second to William Woods University. Per tradition, former Cross Country runner, Abby Holt, led each race dressed as a cow.

William Woods won both races with Principia second in both races. While the Outliers team was not considered part of the score, they would have beaten Westminster if their places had been scored.

Thank you to all the alumni. Some ran and most cheered and rang cowbells!

Up Next:
The team will compete in the SLIAC Conference Championships in Louisville, Kentucky on November 2nd at 10:00 AM.
