GREENCASTLE, IN – After a big 8-1 win to start their spring season, the Principia Women's Tennis team traveled to Indiana to face a strong team from Depauw University on Saturday evening. Though they only won one match, the Panthers battled hard as three of the singles matches went to third set tiebreakers.
The lone victory of the night came from a gutsy effort by Panthers' captain Kelsie Huss at #3 singles. After trading sets, the match went to the deciding 10-point tiebreaker. The breaker went back-and-forth with neither player gaining an edge. Tied at 10-10, the match extended further until someone could win by two. After 11-11, Huss used her steady play to win two straight points and claim the victory. This was an especially big win as Huss lost in straight sets to this same player last season.
At #1 singles, Bissola Lassissi had a strong match, barely losing in a similarly extended third set tiebreaker. After winning the first set 7-5, Lassissi lost the second 7-6. Both players were crushing their ground strokes and moving well around the court in the 10-point breaker, but Lassissi came up just short at 11-9.
Kimbeley Peterson also had a long match at #5 singles and lost in the 10-pointer, holding off three match points before falling 10-6. Veronica Volkart teamed up with Lassissi at #1 doubles, battling to the a 5-5 tie before the top DePauw team attacked more and closed out the last three games.
Up Next: The Principia women return home for two matches in Hexberg next week. The Panthers host Hendrix College at 3:00 pm on Friday and then Rose-Hulman at 11:00 am on Saturday.
