ELSAH, IL – It was a great weekend in Hexberg for Principia Women's Tennis! The Panthers followed up their narrow victory over Hendrix on Friday with a dominant performance against Rose-Hulman on Saturday.
Tuned up from their win the night before, the Principia women efficiently designed points resulting in strategic wins in all the matches. At #3 doubles, Kelsie Huss and Ruth Hummell tested themselves by staying close to the net and cutting off volleys. Both players followed the ball looking for opportunities to poach, and came away with a steady 8-4 win. At #2 doubles, Saray Cisneros and Kimbeley Peterson were dialed in on their returns and ground strokes and did not let their opponents into the match, winning 8-2. At #1 doubles, Bissola Lassissi and Veronica Volkart produced strong returns and first serves to cruise to an 8-3 victory.
In singles, Peterson played especially well at #5 as she did not lose a game at #5. She moved well around the court and did not give her opponent any opportunity to generate momentum. Hummell also got her first lopsided win of the season at #6, only dropping two games in her match. Cisneros at #2, Huss at #3, and Volkart at #4 each efficiently produced strong and steady rallies which allowed them to dictate play.
The closest match of the day came at #1 with Lassissi locked in a battle with Rose-Hulman's top player, Taylor Goldman. Lassissi lost the first set rather quickly because she had not yet established her focus and Goldman was playing consistent tennis. At 5-5 in the second set, Lassissi found her game and strategically outhit Goldman to take the set 7-5. She carried the momentum into the 10-point tiebreaker and came out on top, 10-6.
