ELSAH, IL – The Principia Women's Tennis team hosted the Illinois College Lady Blues on Tuesday afternoon as they gear up for the ITA Regional Tournament this weekend. Despite only having five players available to play and needing to forfeit #3 doubles and #6 singles, the Panthers won six of their seven matches for a 6-3 victory.
Principia's top performer on the day was
Saray Hernandez Cisneros, who played #1 singles and doubles, and did not lose a game in either match. She used her strong ground strokes to hit outright winners or force her opponent into errors.
The team was excited to see
Gaby Quintero return to the lineup as she won her singles match at #2 with strong baseline hitting. After cruising through the first set 6-0, she fell behind 3-1 in the second, but then fought back with more consistent play to roll off five games in a row for the win.
Veronica Volkart continued her steady play and won both of her matches at #1 doubles at #3 singles. She was also forceful with her forehand, crushing several winners.
Kimbeley Peterson and
Ruth Hummell were dynamic at the net in their 8-2 win at #2 doubles. It was a turn around from their play a few days earlier as both women played aggressive and defended well.
Up Next: After these last two tuneup matches, the Panthers are looking forward to the ITA Regional Tournament at Washington University in St. Louis this weekend. Cisneros, Volkart, and Peterson will all be playing singles, while Cisneros and Volkart will team up for doubles.
