ELSAH, IL – The Principia Women's Tennis team hosted the Greenville Panthers on Thursday evening for their final match before postseason play. Principia came away with a 9-0 victory to complete a perfect UMAC South regular season winning all 27 matches against their three conference opponents.
The battle of the Panthers began with the doubles matches, and all three Principia pairings played well. At #1,
Bissola Lassissi and
Veronica Volkart won 8-4 behind creative and inspired play at the net. At #2, sister
Mafe Quintero and
Gaby Quintero dominated 8-0 with their powerful, smooth ground strokes. And at #3,
Saray Hernandez Cisneros and
Kimbeley Peterson won 8-4 with forceful winner and well-placed volleys.
Principia continued their outstanding play into singles as the first five matches ended in straight sets in favor of the hosts. Greenville was only able to win more than two games in one of those ten sets as the Principia women overpowered their counterparts. In the final match at #6, Volkart won her first set 6-3, but her opponent fought back to win the second set 6-2. Volkart was able to recompose herself and take the 10-point tiebreaker 10-6 to complete the 9-0 sweep and preserve the perfect regular season.
Up Next: The Panthers now have a week to prepare for the UMAC South Tournament on Saturday, April 27 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center down in Forest Park. Principia will have the top seed and take on MUW in the semifinals at 10:00 AM.
