Shane Witters Hicks is a senior who is thrilled to be back with the supportive Track & Field community, which he has grown to love. Throughout his life, Shane has enjoyed spending time in nature – mostly hiking, biking, canoeing, and running through the Rocky Mountains and Utah. While he finds joy in all of these, his favorite medium of expression is (you guessed it!) running. Shane loves both the leisurely pleasure of hours-long trail runs, as well as the more explosive and perseverance-laden racing of Track and Cross Country – programs which he considers to be exciting, ripe with character development, and very worthwhile. Having discovered a newfound curiosity in the electric grid and energy, Shane hopes to research power systems and pursue a related degree after he graduates. At his home in Golden, CO, Shane is often found meandering in the wilderness or pouring over textbooks in a local coffee shop.
1. When did you start track & field and why?
Freshman year of college was my first year of track. After the cross season, I wanted to make the leap from a seasonal runner to a year-round athlete. It’s been fun to see the progress since then!
2. What do you love most about track & field?
- The sense of community – I love walking into Crafton Center and seeing all of the sports teams congregating, getting ready for practice. Also the comradery resulting from supporting your teammates and competitors in a wide variety of fields. Track and field may be an “individual” sport, but there can definitely be a unified/supportive atmosphere about it as well.
- Unlike cross country – which I love for the grace and overall mental grit of long-distance running – I’m learning to appreciate the explosive, joyful power that you can find in track racing.
