Todd Zimmerman grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and was a standout basketball player at Principia College from 2007-11. He currently ranks third all-time in points (1556) and first all-time in assists (431) during the program's NCAA era. He became interested in coaching during his senior year in high school and started working basketball camps during the summers. After graduating college, he began his coaching career as the Principia College Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach in 2011.
 
Zimmerman is now entering his 8th year at the helm of the Men's Basketball program and has garnered many accomplishments during his tenure. He was named SLIAC Coach of the Year in 2016-17 and is responsible for 3 of the 7 double-digit win seasons in Principia's 33 seasons in the SLIAC. In 2022-23, he led the Panthers to their most wins in program history (18), culminating in their first ever home SLIAC Tournament victory. In total, he has coached 2 SLIAC Players of the Year, 1 SLIAC Newcomer of the Year, 2 SLIAC 6th Men of the Year, and 6 different players who were named All-Conference.

Zimmerman has also served as Assistant Coach for other sports at the College: women's basketball (2011–2014), men's tennis (2011–2023), and women's tennis (2016). He has coached athletes that hold DIII, SLIAC, and Principia College records, as well as coached 2 athletes that went on to the professional level.
