Men's Soccer nips Fontbonne 3-0 in Conference Opener

In the second meeting in as many weeks, the Principia men's soccer team shutout SLIAC conference pre-season favorites Fontbonne University with an identical score of 3-0 on Tuesday night in Elsah, IL.  The Men's soccer team remains 8th in the nation and 1st in the region in the newly released NSCAA poll.

In what was the SLIAC conference opener for the Panthers, an early break would prove to be the wakeup call needed as a Fontbonne attacker broke through the left flank but his final touch would fail him as his attempt on goal went begging.
The Panthers responded with a 21st minute strike when Ricky Seaman was brought down 25 yards from goal. Yaw Danso stepped to the ball and unleashed a curling ball that the griffin keeper did well to parry away but an alert Paul Sanderude crashed the far post for an easy tap in.   Lightning would strike twice two minutes later as #Spencer Brown won a 50/50 ball and found Danso alone in the middle of the park as Seaman's run drew two defenders and Danso  graciously sprinted into the parted sea to nod his first on the night.  Seaman would later get an opportunity to put away the griffins when the ref adjudicated that the griffin defender pushed him off the ball in the box. Seaman's  lackadaisical attempt was easily stopped by the griffin custodian.
The second half was marred with unnecessary fouls from both sides as the teams attempted to put their stamp on the match. The Panthers were on the mark again in the 86th minute as Wes Fleming struck for his first of the year off a Danso corner kick leaving no doubt as to the outcome. The Panthers are now 7-0 overall, 1-0 in conference play and turn around with a Thursday contest against Lindenwood Belleville at 6pm in Elsah before traveling to Eureka on Saturday for their second conference matchup.
