Principia faced off against conference opponent Eureka tonight. Eureka's game plan of double teaming
Lindsay Sydness, (Principia's leading scorer), naturally left the other guards more open from behind the arc. At the end of the half Principia was 9-13 from the three-point line. Absolutely “on fire” was
Shannon Briggs with 4-4, Dani Corbitt with 2-3, her sister
Sarah Corbitt with 2-4, and Dani Carney with 1-2. While Principia was on fire, Eureka was cleaning up on the boards. Eureka led in rebounding 20-14, however, Principia led on the scoreboard 39-27 at half time.
Emily Wheeler came alive scoring all eleven of her points in the second half as the Lady Panthers extended their lead in second half to as much at 19 points. Principia was never able to win the rebounding battle and really had to fight for the boards once
Lindsay Sydness fouled out with about five minutes left in regulation. Eureka also found some offensive rhythm and made a run pulling within 6 points at the end of the game. Dani Carney assisted in the win; making her second three to stop Eureka's glimpse of momentum.
Sarah Corbitt, Lyndsay Eaton and
Carey Erwin all played consistent locked down defense which caused the coaches to jump to their feet a number of times! Eureka was able to match their inside game with some outside shooting. Eureka shot fifty percent from the three-point line having four in the second. When Eureka got close they tried to extend the game by fouling Principia. We ended the game 21-29 from the charity strip.
Dani Corbitt had yet another fabulous night, ending with 18 points and 4 assists.
Shannon Briggs had a collegiate high tonight with 18 points. Emily Wheeler accomplished a personal goal and had a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio.
Lindsay Sydness was 7-8 from the line tonight for a total of 11 points. Dani Carney and
Sarah Corbitt each added 8 points to the board. Never to be underestimated were
Jocelyn Shoemake's minutes on defense with one steal and her consistent encouragement for her teammates, aiding in the victory. Principia's next game is Tuesday, January 26, versus Spalding University at HOME.
