Unstoppable Corbitt Sisters Lead to the Victory over St. Mary's of the Woods; Final Score 55-51

The Lady Panthers played with the most unity and poise shown all season, playing from buzzer to buzzer for the win over St. Mary's of the Woods College, 55-51. Prinicipia won the tip off and scored on the next possession from an Emily Wheeler pass to back door cutter Sarah Corbitt good for the first two points on the board. Principia's defense was at its finest, led by Sarah Corbitt with 5 steals, 8 defensive rebounds, 2 blocks and Lindsay Sydness with 3 steals and 9 defensive rebounds (12 total). Sarah Corbitt continues to convert many of her steals into fast break lay-ups, which kept the crowd roaring. Ten minutes into game, the score remained at 4-3.
Sarah Corbitt hit a three-pointer to tie it at 11-11 with 6:32 left in the game. With just under two minutes left in the first half, freshman Dani Carney busted a three-pointer from the corner, making the score 14-16. However, Principia did not score again, and St. Mary's of the Woods capitalized on this, leaving the score at 16-20 at the half.
Just one minute into the beginning of the second half, and junior Dani Corbitt was hungry. Corbitt received the ball at the top of the key, saw she was open and drained the three-pointer; Principia now down by three. Next play down on offense, and Dani Corbitt was found on the perimeter yet again to sink a three-pointer! If that was not impressive enough, the next possession down the floor, not to be out shot, her sister Sarah Corbitt drained a three-pointer; the score now read 23-22. Shortly thereafter, aiding in Principia's regain of momentum, Emily Wheeler found an opening in the short corner and hit the shot. St. Mary's of the Woods was now forced to respond, which they did with two buckets in a row. However, Sarah Corbitt was not finished yet; from a great penetration kick out from Emily Wheeler to Sarah, she hit yet another three-pointer. Freshmen Shannon Briggs had a stunning drive to the hoop for the score, drew the foul, and knocked down her free-throw. Briggs added in 2 steals, 6 rebounds, and 5 points to give the team a solid contribution for the game. With nearly six minutes left in the ball game, St. Mary's made an inside jumper to tie the score at 40-40. If you thought Sarah Corbitt had stopped at her last three, she proved everyone wrong; just under two minutes in the game, Sydness kicked it out to Corbitt good for three! Leader and commander, Emily Wheeler, shot many clutch free-throws down to the wire, shooting 8-8. Scoring leaders for the game were Sarah Corbitt with 18 points and 9 rebounds, and Emily Wheeler with 14 points and 4 assists.  The Lady Panthers next game is Monday, February 1, HOME at 7:00pm.
