DECATUR, ILL. -- The women's soccer team continued their season travels with a trip to Millikin University today dropping the game 2-1. The Panthers struggled to find a rhythm from the first whistle, and Millikin senior Allison Horne capitalized on an early defensive breakdown with a breakaway goal against freshmen goalkeeper,
Murilla King, in the 8th minute. The early goal lit a fire under the Panthers as they went on to out shoot Millikin in the first half - six shots to five - and
Cristina Post was able to find the back of the net for her second goal of the season, leaving the score tied 1-1 at the break.
Again in the second half, it was Millikin that came out of the gates firing at the Panther's goal and again, Horne found the back of the net as she challenged King for a 50-50 ball inside of the box. The Panther's went on to play an aggressive second half, controlling much of the play but finding goal scoring opportunities that were few and far between. In the 85th minute,
Alicia Girbes-Pierce ran down a through ball from
Hanna Mehring, but her shot was denied by the wood-work.
The “Lunch-Pail” player of the game today was
Julianna Mangelsdorf for helping to control the back line and laying crunching tackles on Millikin attackers.
The Panther's next game is on Saturday, October 9th, against SLIAC opponent Spaulding University in the homecoming matchup. Game time is at 1:00 PM.
