CHICAGO, ILL. -- The Principia Panthers continued their road trip in Chicago land with a 2-1 victory over North Park University. The Panther offense created many scoring opportunities keeping the Viking defense on their toes. As a result, in the 22nd minute of the first half Principia took the lead with a goal from
Rachel Publicover assisted by
Lauren Wienecke. Wienecke 's cleared 45-yard ball enabled Publicover to run onto and shoot on the top of the 18. Publicover's shot was perfectly placed to the lower right corner of the goal out of the reach of the Viking keeper. The Panthers held the Vikings scoreless for the rest of the half. In the second half, the Panthers scored in the 68th minute leading the Vikings 2-0. The second goal was a team effort starting from the back stringing seven one and two touch passes together moving up the field. Freshman
Hayley Cooke sent the ball into the box where
Alicia Girbes-Pierce was able to push the ball past the Viking keeper. Finally, in the 69th minute the feisty North Park Vikings tallied its lone goal to bring the final result 2-1. Solid performances were held by the Panther defense keeping the Vikings' attack neutralized. The Panther midfield did a great job supporting the play in linking passes between the defense and offense.
The lunch bucket award was presented to
Julianna Mangelsdorf for her strong play and hard work as right back. Mangelsdorf forced the Viking attack to play predictable and she anticipated oncoming passes which enabled her to consistently win the ball. Publicover was selected for the golden boot award; she created scoring opportunities through her hard checks and distribution into the midfield.
Principia's record now stands at 2-2 and will be playing Lindenwood University this Saturday.
