Highlanders outduel Principia 4-3 in conference play

JACKSONVILLE, ILL. -- Principia soccer team succumbed to the battling highlanders in Jacksonville, IL on a cool windy afternoon with the game winner coming off a penalty kick with a minute left in regulation.

The highlanders hard work and determination was rewarded following a careless tackle by Principia in the box.  The ensuing kick rippled the net past Principia custodian Brian Simpson.

The makeshift Principia side found the going tough despite a promising start that saw Gustavo Batista tap a cross in from Abi Carper in the 10th minute for the lead.  The lead however was short lived with the highlanders responding with a clinical finish off an errant square pass from Principia's center backs.  Alex Bentley's harmless cross would inadvertently find the back of the net for Principia before a response from the highlanders to tie the game.

In the second half, Alan Cheatham's strike seemed to be the answer needed to seal that deal but the highlanders were quick to capitalize on another Princpia mix-up in the back to tie the game at three goals a piece.  As fate would have it, with a minute left on the clock Principia's woes continued with the fateful take down in the box for the game winner.  Principia travels on Saturday to play Webster University at 3pm at the soccer park in Fenton, Mo.
