Different results for softball's second day in Myrtle Beach
Principia College Athletic Department
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- What a difference a day makes! The Principia softball team arrived in Myrtle Beach on Sunday and on Monday put a darn good face forward in their first two games, winning one and losing one, both of which were well played games. Today a different team showed up at the Central Park complex and it wasn't a fun one to watch.
In game one today a solid looking Arcadia University ran all over an unprepared and apparently rather unmotivated Principia. Arcadia is a good team having a little more skill than Prin but the differences are not significant. Principia hitters did not get a hit all game, hence the zero score. Of Arcadia's 12 runs, nine were unearned as Principia defenders were mentally somewhere else making error after error.
Andie Raffles threw a solid game but the defense really let her down.
Offensively there isn't a lot to report. Andie found her way on base due to an Arcadia error and then stole two bases but was left stranded at 3rd base. Jessy MacMullin drew two walks but the offense was not able to advance her to score. Final score left Arcadia with 12 runs and Principia with none.
Game two of day two was basically more of what happened in game one. Lycoming came to play and Principia tended to watch them play. There was a spurt of interest at the start of the game with Principia playing well for two innings. They scored in the top of the second to tie the score but then they allowed Lycoming to answer in the bottom of the second with three runs to regain the lead. Prin came back with another run in the third but again gave that run back in the bottom of the third.
In the fourth the wheels came off completely with Lycoming scoring eight times. What continued to haunt Prin was their defensive play. Like
Andie Raffles in the earlier game,
Devon Harrison threw well enough to keep Prin in the game but the defense behind her was indecisive and paid the price for their hesitation. Principia has a very capable defense so today's two games are a bit of a mystery. Let's hope their normal standard of play returns tomorrow.
There was a little more offense in this game but the bats are still quiet. Like their defense, Prin has the potential for a very good offense and we will remain optimistic that their bats will catch fire soon. Christine Nacawicz went 2 for 3 and others finding a hit in game two were
Devon Harrison,
Casey Lee,
Jessy MacMullin,
Marianna Distel and
Jocelyn Shoemake.
Andie Raffles earned a walk and stole another base.
