Hard fought battle ends in a dissapointing loss for Men's soccer

Box Score ST. LOUIS, MO. -- The Principia men's soccer team dropped their first conference game tonight to archrival Fontbonne griffins 1-0 in a closely contested match in St. Louis.  This was a thrilling affair with both teams putting their best foot forward.  The griffins who came into the contest ranked 10th in the region in the latest polls fought hard to preserve their conference lead.  For the first time this season the panthers had their first unit playing together and it showed as they dominated the bulk of possession in the proceedings for much of the first half.  A well-executed diagonal ball from the left flank to the right center forward is what would ultimately cost the panthers.  The griffin forward did well to take down the high rising ball and cleverly slip it over a charging Alejandro Ramirez-Jasso.  His second touch would wrong foot John Gotwals before he struck a one-timer past panther keeper Matt Jones.  It was indeed a well-executed individual effort that deserved to collect all the spoils on the day.

Despite a heartbreaker going into the half, the panthers came out in the second half the more determined side, maintaining the bulk of possession again but failing to unlock the griffin defense time and time again.  McGuire Semnacher came closest when his effort sailed wide of the post.  This is certainly a performance the panthers can continue to build on as they continue to resurrect a season that needs resuscitation.  Leif Carlson once again put in a solid performance dictating flow in the game while the rest of the team did exceptionally well playing their role and executing the game plan.  With consistency in performance going forward, the panther's future solely lies in their hands as they face their next opponents in defending SLIAC champions, Westminster College in Fulton on Saturday afternoon @3pm.
