ST. LOUIS, MO. -- Tonight the Principia College women's basketball team faced the Eutectics of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in their 2nd game of the 2012-2013 season. Off to a bit of a slow start offensively, the Lady Panthers scored just 5 points in the first 5 minutes, a nice bucket from sophomore Mac Wilgus and a three ball from senior captain Sarah Corbitt. After that Principia started to find its groove, mainly due to the catalyst of Corbitt who picked STLCOP's zone apart with solid outside shooting (she finished with a 52% field goal percentage) and great hustle from senior forward Jocelyn Shoemake. Corbitt was in hot pursuit of her 1,000 career point, needing just 8 points in tonight's match-up to achieve this marker. She hit this early on, and never looked back. Corbitt ended with 31 points on the night, adding eleven boards, three assists and two steals, also marking her first double-double of the season. After a slow 1st half, Principia came out in the 2nd looking to widen the lead, but once again started sluggish on offense allowing the Eutectics to cut the lead to 9 before finally taking a double-digit lead to finish out the half. In particular, sophomore captain Becca DeNicholas led the defensive effort, as well as putting the final punctuation on the game with a sick drive down the lane for a right-handed finish. DeNicholas also added 4 assists.
Sarah wasn't the only one to record some career landmarks. Sophomore forward Jess Bushong had a career high 10 points, 5 boards and 3 blocks, showing vast improvement from the previous night's game against Robert Morris-Springfield. Also posting career highs was sophomore guard Mckinzie Wilgus who contributed 18 points, 5 assists and 8 boards.
The Lady Panthers go into the Thanksgiving break 1-1 so far, and will look to add to the victory column a week from Thursday in their first conference game of the season. Principia will face the Panthers of Greenville College at home on Thursday, Nov. 29th. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
