Unlucky at Fontbonne; Principia loses 50-67

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, MO. -- Tonight the Principia College women's basketball team traveled to St. Louis to face the Lady Griffins of Fontbonne University.  Having lost to Fontbonne in their first meeting of the season, Principia was looking to even the draw with a victory.  And in fact, Principia came out with a great start to the game, going 14-3 before the tide turned and some unlucky calls and a couple missed shots allowed Fontbonne to get back in the game and eventually take the lead.  Principia played with Fontbonne the whole game, with several nice offensive plays, and back to back stops that stunted Fontbonne's offensive flow.  The discrepancy in rebounding (Fontbonne ended with 40 to Prin's 30) and the fact that Fontbonne shot 14 free throws in the 1st half alone while Principia shot none resulted in a 13 point deficit for the Lady Panthers at halftime.

In the 2nd half, Principia showed just as much fight as in the first 20 minutes, but turned the ball over several more times, preventing them from closing the gap.  Prin shot a solid 46% from the field as a team in the 2nd half, and showed great spirit on the defensive end, often holding Fontbonne scoreless for 3-4 possessions at a time.  While Prin tallied another loss on the scoreboard tonight, they certainly gained a victory in the way they fought through the adversity that plagued them throughout the game.  Junior captain Sarah Corbitt had 15 points and a game high 5 steals.  Freshman forward Torie DeNicholas had a game high 17 points (she shot 50% from beyond the arc) to which she added 5 rebounds.  And senior captain Lindsay Sydness contributed 10 points, 8 boards and 7 blocks for the game.

The Panthers play next in Terre Haute, IN on Thursday night against the St. Mary of the Woods Pomeroys.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm EST.
