ELSAH, ILL. -- This afternoon the Principia College women's basketball team faced the Greenville Panthers in their 2nd meeting of the season. Having lost to Greenville at their place earlier this season, Principia was ready to even the score. Playing in honor of their lone senior Lindsay Sydness, the Lady Panthers hit the first buckets of the game to take an early lead, a lead which they never relinquished. With several nice buckets from Sydness, Prin found their offensive rhythm right away, and coupled with high intensity defense, the Panthers were able to stay ahead throughout the entire 1st half. Their lead was also due in part to solid free throw shooting from the entire team (Principia was 9-11 from the free throw line in the 1st half). Despite some turnovers, and a late run by Greenville, Principia managed to keep the lead and went into the locker room at halftime up 23-17.
The 2nd half got off to a bit of a rocky start for Principia, and Greenville managed to hang around, finally tying the game at 32 all. But Principia kept their cool and stayed strong with the ball, continuing to execute on offense and putting together consecutive stops on the defensive end. Prin also managed to secure some crucial rebounds, particularly from freshman forward Karina Olsen (she had 8 for the game). The hot free throw shooting continued (Prin was 76% from the charity stripe this game) and freshman forward Torie DeNicholas found her shot, hitting her next 3 buckets to help Prin with their lead. Greenville played hard throughout however, and Principia wasn't able to put the game away until the final minute, when freshman guard Mac Wilgus hit 2 free throws to help put Principia up 8. In the end, it was clear that every Lady Panther came to play, finally putting together a game worthy of their potential. And just in time. Junior captain Sarah Corbitt had 8 points (all from the free throw line), 10 rebounds and a game high 6 assists for the game. Torie DeNicholas ended with 20 points (she had all of Principia's 3-point field goals and was a perfect 4-4 from the line) to which she also added 8 rebounds. And senior captain Lindsay Sydness, in the final home game of her career, posted her 2nd triple-double of the season with 24 points, 12 boards and 13 blocks.
Principia plays next on Tuesday February 21st for their final game of the season at Blackburn College. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
