Panthers opens season with a double header sweep of Rust

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 HOLLY SPRINGS, MISS. --The Panthers traveled down to Holly Springs, Mississippi, to take on Rust College. Senior Greg Ball took the ball in game one and got the victory. The Panthers jumped out to an early three run lead in the first inning taking advantage of a couple of errors and walks by Rust. Rust answered back in the bottom of the first scoring twice on a couple of Panther miscues. With the score 3-2, the Panthers came out aggressively in the second inning scoring five runs with a couple of hits, walks and errors by the home team. For the Panthers Greg Ball settled in and found his command shutting the door on the opponents for the next 3 innings. For the game Greg gave up 2 unearned runs while striking out 7 and giving up just two hits. Sophomore Luke Ball came into relieve, allowing no earned runs. The Panthers continued adding runs each inning scoring 10 more times. The Panthers showed patience at the plate, walking 13 times and were aggressive on the bases stealing 8 times. Offensively the Panthers were lead by sophomore Spencer Clevenger who went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's and 2 stolen bases, senior Robbie Nickell went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's and freshman Dallen Russell also went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's.
 
In game two senior Nate Gotch got the start and dominated on the mound allowing just one hit while striking out 6.  Zach Becker came in relief and pitched two innings of scoreless relief. The Panthers again scored early and often with 2 in the first and 11 in the second. As a team the Panthers finished with 16 runs, 14 hits, 7 walks, and stole 2 bases. Senior Robbie Nickell lead the offensive charge going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI's, senior Alan Cheatham went 2 for 3 with a double and 4 RBI's, freshman Dallen Russell went 3 for 3 with an RBI, and freshman Gavin Thomas also collected two hits with a RBI. Although the team is off to a fast start there is a lot of room for improvement, especially on the defensive end, and the Panthers will be back to work on Monday. The Panthers are back in action Friday, March 2nd when they take on St. Louis Christian at 4pm at home.
