Panthers get strong pitching and Cheatham sets hit record, but fall to Spalding 6-4

Box Score ELSAH, ILL. --The Gold and Blue got a strong pitched game by both Jake Elmore and Luke Ball, and Alan Cheatham sets a hit record but Principia fell to Spalding 6-4. Elmore made his second career start and went 4 innings, giving up 6 hits, 4 runs, and only 2 earned runs. Luke Ball came in relief in the 5th inning pitching 5 strong innings, giving up 2 unearned runs, and only allowing 2 hits.

The Panthers took an early lead in the 3-2 in the third inning. Robert Barnacle and Spencer Clevenger leadoff the 3rd inning with walks. Gavin Thomas hit a single to right field. Alan Cheatham hit a hard smash off the glove of the second baseman scoring a run and then Kit Banko hit into a double play scoring Spencer Clevenger. The Spalding Eagles responded with 2 runs in the fourth inning to regain the lead 4-3. The Panthers tied the game up in the 5th inning. Spencer Clevenger leadoff the inning with a single and then stole second base and ended up at third base on a error by the Spalding catcher. Spencer then scored on a wild pitch to even the game up. With the scored knotted 4-4 Spalding took advantage of two Panther errors to regain the lead plating two runs. The Panthers were unable to rally and fell to Spalding by the score of 6-4. Offensively Alan Cheatham continued to swing a hot bat going 3-4 on the day and is leading the batting title race in the SLIAC conference with a .444 average on the season. Alan now holds the record for most hits in a season with 56. Spencer Clevenger, Gavin Thomas, Justin MacDonald, and Alistair Brockmeyer all had one hit apiece.
