ELSAH, ILL. -- This afternoon the Principia College women's basketball team faced the Gorloks of Webster University in their latest conference match-up. Both teams got off to an awkward start offensively, with Principia leading just 3 to 1 after five minutes of play. But as the half wore on, the Gorloks started to find their offensive rhythm, while Principia continued to be plagued by turnovers. Fortunately Principia played solid team defense, led in large part once again by sophomore forward Jessica Bushong who played strong inside, and locked Webster's guards when forced to switch onto the perimeter. Senior captain Sarah Corbitt led the offensive attack, handling the ball pressure and coming through with important finishes when needed. This game also saw marked improvement from sophomore forward Karina Olsen on the offensive end, who took the ball to the basket strong, and really pursued every rebound. Principia as a team shot well, and led in every field goal percentage category (41% from the field, 50% from three and a season high 82% from the free throw line) but in the end it was a game purely of possessions. With 26 turnovers for the game, Principia gave Webster 25 more shot attempts, an insurmountable deficit before the final buzzer sounded. Despite this discrepancy, Principia continued to improve in many categories, and looks forward to the next match-up of the season. Noteworthy statistical contributions include Olsen with 10 points and 9 rebounds, Bushong with 4 points, 8 boards and a collegiate career high 6 blocks, and Corbitt finished with 25 points, 8 boards and 4 steals, as well as going a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe.
Principia plays next on Tuesday, January 22nd at home against the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
