Balanced effort leads attack in a Principia victory over the Eutectics

ELSAH, ILL. -- Tonight the Principia College women's basketball team tipped-off against the Eutectics of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in their 2nd match-up of the season.  Coming out with a bit of a slow start, the Panthers struggled to find their first basket.  But once they did, it was as if everyone decided it was time to get buckets.  Solid shooting from all three of the starting guards helped kick start the offensive effort, and for the first time Principia committed to getting out in transition.  Particularly effective in transition was sophomore forward Karina Olsen, who ran the floor well and connected on many passes from senior captain Sarah Corbitt (Corbitt ended with 9 assists, one shy of a double-double for the night).  Of course, it wasn't all offense, and sophomore forward Jessica Bushong led the stand, with three monster blocks and 3 defensive boards, and was aided by Olsen who had a stellar rebounding performance finishing with a season high 15 boards, as well as 5 blocks.

The balanced scoring was really the story of the night though.  All seven Panthers scored, with sophomore forward Tory Silver finishing a sweet jumper, and senior forward Jocelyn Shoemake earning her two from the charity stripe.  Sophomore guard McKinzie Wilgus shot with confidence and added 10 points to the total, as well as 6 boards and 2 assists.  With a career high 17 points, sophomore captain Becca DeNicholas played a great offensive game, shooting threes with confidence, and connecting on several give-and-gos with Olsen.  DeNicholas also contributed 5 boards and 6 assists.  And finally, Corbitt led all scorers with 23 points, 7 boards and 4 steals to go with the aforementioned 9 dimes.

The Panthers play next on Thursday, January 24th at home against the Golden Eagles of Spalding University.  This will be the 2nd meeting of the season for the two teams.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
