Spalding upsets Panthers 1-0 in crucial conference tie

Box Score The Spalding Eagles managed to pull off an upset courtesy of Jackson Cantrell in the 7th minute when he snuck behind the Panther's backline before finishing low on a breakaway.  The goal would prove to be the difference in the game as the eagles walked away with maximum points on an afternoon where they delivered on their chances.  On the other hand, the Panthers will rue their missed opportunities that may have turned the tide.  A first half scramble inside the box off a corner kick by Nate Waters was redirected towards goal only to be cleared off the line by an Eagle defender.

In the second half, it seemed as though the Panthers would cease the day as they took control of the match for long spells and had the better slate of opportunities.  Another goal line melee was thwarted off the line three times as Gotwals effort bounced off a defender on the line before Richard Bonsi's effort was also denied and finally Waters strike was also cleared off the goal line.  Kevin Silcox also had an opportunity sneaking in behind the defensive line from the left wing to meet a neat through ball from Laurencee Martins.  His first touch was sublime but his second inside the 12 yard line went begging wide of the goal with the keeper stranded. Dubien Tshiamanga was slipped through over the defence inside the box but tried to round the keeper instead losing the ball in the process.  Gustavo Batista would get in on the act, combining from the left flank all the way inside the box but his effort struck the near post.

Tough day for the Panthers who must regroup to take on conference leaders Webster University on Tuesday afternoon at 5:00 PM at Soccer Park in Fenton, MO.
