Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 It was not a beautiful day of volleyball, but after a disappointing loss to SLIAC frontrunner Greenville, the Prin women dug their heels in until they had secured a win over a fiery, tough Fontbonne effort. The Panthers are now 14-7 and in 3rd place in the SLIAC behind Greenville and Webster. The women play Webster in St. Louis Tuesday Oct 15th at 7:00pm.
Greenville showed their normal strategy serving 60% of the balls to
Tess Rountree. The Prin squad was prepared for such shenanigans, but it appeared enough to add a little chaos to the offense which may have been responsible for an unusual and lackluster team hitting percentage of .123 (season average is .223). Prin also struggled at the service line putting 88% in versus their 94% October average. As the Panthers look to truly compete at this level, the team must control these elements with ease so that their competitive identity is big and bold.
Tess Rountree and Jess Bushong combined for 21 of the team's 28 kills, and Prin had four players digging in double digits –
Savanna Sprague,
Sierra Sprague, Tess, and
Summer Switzer. Savanna was the lone member of the 100% serve club in this match.
Principia stepped on the court against a hard fighting Fontbonne squad. They had just lost a tough match to MacMurray and it appeared they were looking for revenge against whoever was on the other side of the court. Fontbonne got stronger as the match went on. They played soulful defense and kept the ball flying offensively – with some impressive deep court kills.
Prin was looking to this match to renew the consistency in their offense, but it was still a struggle. Prin put down 28% kills – still shy of their season average of 33%. Their serving bumped up to 92% with eight aces. Prin controlled the match for games one and two, but Fontbonne just plain beat the Panthers in game three. Game four was tied 14-14 before Prin was able to create the momentum and take the match 3-1.
Jess, Tess and Sierra led the offensive charge combining for 35 kills, and Jess hit a delightful .345. Prin had five players in double digits defensively. Tess led the pack with 25 digs, Summer had 20, Molly 18, Savanna 16, and Sierra 12. Tess and
Deanna Scheck served 100% for the match.
