Women's soccer battles Millikin University for a 0-0 OT tie

Box Score Decatur, Ill. -- Today we traveled to Decatur, IL to play Millikin University. We started the game well, keeping possession but we had difficulty penetrating Millikin's defense. Millikin played a very defensive first half making it challenging for us to build an effective attack. Millikin also had their fair share of dangerous attacks but our defense did a great job breaking up their chances.

In the second half, we struggled to move the ball up the field. Our inability to keep possession led to many counter attacks by Millikin keeping our defensive line on their toes. A scoreless second half caused the game to go into overtime.

Nonetheless, we came alive in overtime. Dominating the first 10 minutes we had many opportunities to score. We showed great composure and patience as we moved the ball around the field. The second half of overtime was more evenly matched but we battled through and stayed mentally engaged. Although the game ended in a 0-0 tie, as a coaching staff, we were very proud that we didn't let down defensively and allow a Millikin goal.

We did not have a Golden Boot or Lunch Pail award, however, one player's efforts was worth mentioning, so senior Murilla King was the Player of the Match. King, in goal, did a fantastic job blocking Millikin's dangerous chances. In the first half, King followed a crossed ball across the goal mouth to stop an open shot. In the second half, she repeated this same action and stopped another Millikin opportunity. During overtime she came off her line and dove on a loose ball, once again preventing a goal winning opportunity for Millikin.

Our next game will be away against Spalding University this Saturday at 2:00 PM EST.
