Battle of the Panthers ends in a 1-1 stalemate

Box Score Elsah, Ill. - The battle for supremacy in Panther land turned out to be an entertaining affair as both Principia and Greenville battled their hearts out in a 1-1 stalemate on Saturday afternoon in Elsah, IL.   The tie earns the Greenville Panthers the last playoff spot in the SLIAC tournament next week.  The game marked the second successive year where the two sides have tied in this encounter.  This was also the last match in which three seniors saw their last official action for the Panthers.  Senior captain John Gotwals, Evan Sperr and Abi Carper all had a solid afternoon inspiring the Panthers in their search for a winning goal

Greenville was first to strike when they ceased on a loose ball off a corner kick in the first half to claim the lead.  Principia however kept battling but were unfortunate not to find the equalizer until the second half.  A Leif Carlson free kick, dump ball in the box, resulted in a push on Gotwals inside the box resulting in a spot kick to Principia.  Nate Waters' attempt was blocked but he did well to thump in the rebound to secure the share of spoils for the Panthers.

Greenville was ferocious chasing the game twice hitting the crossbar, but to no avail.  Their persistence resulted in a Carlson take down inside the box which resulted in a spot kick to Greenville.  The penalty attempt ricocheted off the cross bar with the score remaining level at the end of regulation and in overtime.  Principia finishes the season as the sixth team in the SLIAC standings with at record of 6-9-3.  Gratitude and thanks go to our seniors for their great contributions over the last four years and to our fans near and far for their support, see you next year.
