Volleyball loses nailbiter to Westminster 21-25, 29-31, 25-23, 25-16, 13-15; beats Blackburn in three

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The volleyball team battled soulfully in a five game match against Westminster College, but came up just a bit short. It was a match that pitted #1 SLIAC hitter Tess Rountree against #3 SLIAC hitter Riley Lawrence. Both were a force to be reckoned with. Tess put down a career high 39 kills with only 4 errors, for a .422 slugging percentage.

Game one was back and forth, exchanging the lead several times. Each team was trying to find their "in a row" muscle to break the game open, but it stayed close until the end. Game two was more of the same with the two teams tied 13 times until Westminster won 31-29. There was trouble in paradise as WC went up 17-12 in game three. This could have meant the end was in sight for a three game victory for Westminster, BUT no! Prin dug their heels in and refused to give up. They found some conviction and boldness that opened the door again. Savanna Sprague served tough at the right time and Prin played solid defense to climb back to 16-17. It was back and forth again with Prin whittling down the deficit slowly but surely.  Prin tied it up 21-21 and then methodically finished the game 25-23. Game four was all Prin.  Solid defense and powerful hitting got Prin  to 16-10, and then great "in-a-row" tough serving from Summer Switzer pulled Prin to 20-11. WC had a few moments of rebound, but Prin took the game 25-16. Game five was a battle too. It was tied 7-7, and stayed a one point game until the end when Prin lost 13-15.

Jess Bushong added 14 kills to the offensive attack, while Sierra Sprague posted nine kills, Christine Nacewicz five and Lily Richards three. Sierra was very effective, with only 1 error hitting .310 , and serving 100% and picking up 23 digs. Tess was good for 23 digs, 100% serving including one ace, and two solo blocks. Summer Switzer led the defensive push with 32 digs, and served up four aces. Savanna Sprague recorded 58 assists, 17 digs and three kills of her own. Molly Moser joined Sierra and Tess in the 100% serve club.

And  now it is time to wait!  If Westminster beats Webster on Wednesday, Prin will not make the post season tournament. If Webster wins, Prin will be 3rd playing against Webster in the first round of the tournament.

THREE GAME SWEEP OVER BLACKBURN
Defensive specialist Deanna Scheck and Middle Blocker Sara Stephenson started in this match and did a great job. Sara killed two balls and scored on two solo blocks. Deanna picked up 6 digs.  It was a well rounded offensive attack with  Tess putting down 13 kills with zero errors for a stellar .565 match. Jess Bushong added seven  kills, Lily Richards four and Christine Nacewicz three. Savanna, Lily, and Summer were all members of the 100% serving club in this match.
