Elsah, Ill. -- Today the Principia College women's basketball team faced the MacMurray Highlanders in their final match-up of the season. The Panthers started with intensity at the opening tip, fighting hard on defense and getting some good looks on offense. They struggled a bit to finished their offensive possessions, but the game stayed close for most of the 1st half. With some foul trouble though came a dry spell on offense for the Panthers, and after being down just six with a score of 11-17, Principia ended up going into the locker room at halftime down 14-34.
With renewed spirit, the Panthers came out of the locker ready to take the game back, and score a quick 8 points to cut the MacMurray lead to 12. But the inconsistency of the Panthers offense kept the Panthers from really making a run at the lead, and MacMurray was able to increase their lead. The Panthers had 3 players in double figures who accounted for all but 2 of Principia's offensive output, which ultimately couldn't propel them to a victory. Sophomore captain Becca DeNicholas had 10 points, to which she added 5 boards and 2 assists. Sophomore forward Jessica Bushong had 11 points to go along with her 5 rebounds and game high 5 blocks. And senior captain Sarah Corbitt contributed 16 points, a team high 8 boards, and a game high 7 assists.
The Panthers play next at Greenville College on Tuesday, February 12th. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
