ST. LOUIS, MO. -- Tonight the Principia College women's basketball team faced the Gorloks of Webster University in their second and final meeting of the season. The Panthers did not get off to the start they wanted, with back-to-back turnovers and two easy jumpers for the Gorloks. But after two minutes of this sloppy play, senior captain Sarah Corbitt decided she had had enough. Kicking it into high gear on defense, and shouldering the Panther's entire offensive burden, Corbitt tried to ignite her team with some competitive fire. Corbitt hit both of her 3 point field goals in the 1st, and looked to push the ball for transition buckets. Principia struggled from the field overall (shooting just 23% for the game), but Corbitt wasn't willing to let the game go without a fight. She scored 15 of Principia's 16 first half points, with the extra point being scored from the charity stripe by sophomore captain Becca DeNicholas. Down 13 going into half time, Corbitt had managed to keep the Panthers within striking distance all by herself.
The second half showed some improvement on defense, with sophomore forward Karina Olsen starting to show some life on the boards (she had 6 total), but Principia was never really able to light a collective team fire. Fortunately, Corbitt found some help in the second half, with senior forward Jocelyn Shoemake coming off the bench to provide an offensive addition. Pursuing offensive boards from her first minutes, Shoemake helped keep several possessions alive, as well as contributed 12 points (6 of which came from the free throw line). The seniors found little help offensively as the game came to a close, although the Panthers began to find a better rhythm and moved the ball with more purpose. Corbitt ended with 19 points, 6 boards and a game high 7 steals.
The Panthers play next at home against the Highlanders of MacMurray College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
